Ribbit, Ribbit

I'm home from RT, voiceless and exhausted. I must apologize for not posting as I'd promised. I could not get the wireless internet access to work on my laptop. To make it up to you, I'm going to dedicate the next four posts to the happenings at RT. I didn't get a LOT of pictures (my camera isn't the best in low light), but I'll share the ones I have, along with the things I heard in workshops and meetings.

Today, I'm going to share a squee. I'm on Barbara Vey's Beyond the Book blog, along with all my Romance Diva pals. I'm thrilled! Check it out HERE.

I don't know if it's the same for everyone, but I need at least a couple of days to sort out everything that happened at RT. It's all a big blur. There are follow up emails to send, people to thank, and promo goodies to mail to bookstore owners. So forgive me if my post today is a lacking focus. My eyes can't focus, let alone my mind, LOL.

Maybe I should go about this chronologically. Wednesday was spent filling (and frequently refilling) my basket on promo alley, stuffing bags with fellow EC authors (who knew something so tedious could be so much fun?!) and reconnecting with people I hadn't seen in a year. I learned my way around the hotel pretty quickly (the hotel staff was wonderful!), made all kinds of new friends (including several Romance Divas), and even had fun standing in line at the EC Moulin Rouge party chatting with fellow EC author Jordan Summers, Annie Windsor (whom I failed to recognize--she looks AMAZING), Mandy Roth (recovering from her flight) and others (you'll notice their last names all start with letters at the end of the alphabet, LOL).

There was dancing and more dancing. Lots of talking (more like shouting--loud music). I think I stumbled up to my room sometime around 1:00am. Of course, my roommate and I had to chat for an hour or so, to catch up :)

I've Got My Camera Ready...

...and I'm headin' to Houston today!

Check back daily. I'll be posting pix of romance fans acting naughty at the 2007 Romantic Times Booklover Convention this week! Costumes, cover models, best selling authors, reviewers, see what you're missing.

And for writers, I'll be posting notes from all the workshops I attend.

Carpe Nocturne Launches this Friday!

Yes, I have had a ton of terrific news to share lately. If it seems that every few days I've been announcing another new ebook release, it's because I have. The next few months are going to be crazy! But oh, so wonderful.

This week, Dressed to Kill releases. For those who are new to my blog, Dressed to Kill is the first book in the Carpe Nocturne series. Technically, Carpe Nocturne is what I'd call a serialized story. Each individual story has its own plot, but the characters, overall plot and love story carry through all three. I simply couldn't say goodbye to these characters after only one story. There were too many issues to explore yet.

I *really* hope you enjoy Dressed to Kill and the later stories (Kiss Me, Kill Me and If Looks Could Kill)! You can read a steamy excerpt HERE.Thanks for reading!

Available TODAY!

Feel the Burn!

I'm thrilled to announce Burning Hunger, the first book in my Twilight's Possession series is up for sale at www.ellorascave.com!

Blurb:

Private detective Brea Maguire is on her first case, tracking down a stolen statue—the Sacred Triad—before it’s buried in the black market. Unfortunately, today—Friday the Thirteenth—isn’t her day. Being kidnapped from the mall by a pair of bizarre guys who put the Chippendales to shame, didn’t figure into her new career plans.

But Dayne and Marek have their own problems.

Dayne, forced into a blood-bond by the king with Marek, his sworn enemy, sees his chance to exact vengeance for his family’s slaughter slip away.

For Marek, the blood-bond with Dayne may be too little, too late. His enemies have learned the secret of the relic, which holds the only hope for a cure for his dying brother, the king.

The race to find the Triad is on.

Enter Brea. Marek can help her find the Triad, and use it to save his brother’s life, but only if she, too, enters the blood-bond. The burning hunger that accompanies it is a major complication none of them anticipated.

Two men, one woman—and a driving sexual hunger that none can resist, in a race against time to save one man—or destroy thousands.

Warning: This book is a menage a trois, and contains a scene with male/male sexual interaction.

Short excerpt:

Brea’s body was burning up. She was the meat in a Chippendale sandwich and God help her, she was loving it! Smooshed between two hot, impossibly sexy bodies, her shirt gone, her bared nipples teased to aching erection by the delicious friction against Number One’s shirt. Two sets of hands were exploring each other then her body, easing her out of the rest of her clothes, smoothing up her arms and down her sides. Two mouths were tickling her neck and shoulders with teasing kisses and soft nips.

Two voices murmured seductive promises.

Who would have thought it was possible? To be so lost? To experience such overwhelming need?

Before she fully realized it, she was unclothed and so were they.

Two perfect bodies. Toned, tanned and both possessing a latent power that stole the oxygen from her lungs.

Their expressions mirrored each other’s, both dark with desire. It was their looks, the heat she saw simmering in their eyes that drove her backward, until the back of her legs struck what she quickly realized was the bed.

Read a longer excerpt HERE.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Burning Hunger. I love this book. It was a ton of fun to write and has all the elements I crave in a book--to die for (fangy) heroes, an action-packed plot, and a heroine who can handle it all.

American Title IV Submission Guidelines

http://www.romantictimes.com/news_amtitlesubmission.php

AMERICAN TITLE IV COMPETITION: FOURTH YEAR'S A CHARM

Want to be the next American Title winner? Get cracking on your
full-length PARANORMAL manuscript -- time travel, urban fantasy,
futuristic, shape-shifting, etc. -- for the next installment of
our American Title contest. You may be among the 10 contestants
to compete for a Dorchester Publishing contract.

AREAS OF COMPETITION WILL INCLUDE: Best Opening Sentence, Story
Summary, Description of Hero and Heroine, Best Dialogue Scene and
Best Romantic Scene. Each round of submissions will be printed in
RT BOOKreviews, beginning in late '07. After each round, two
contestants will be eliminated.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Unpublished authors who have a completed
paranormal manuscript of 80,000 to 90,000 words should send the
first three chapters (no more than 50 pages) with a cover letter
and a two- to seven-page synopsis to: American Title Contest,
Dorchester Publishing, 200 Madison Ave., Suite 2000, New York, NY
10016. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY JUNE 1, 2007.

Finalists must agree to participate in each of the five rounds of
the competition posted on our website and must submit copy for
ALL five categories by Aug. 15.

AMERICAN TITLE FAQ ANSWERED BY DORCHESTER

What does "unpublished" mean?

Any author whose work has not been printed as a book may enter
the contest. For example:
. If you have been e-published, you're eligible.
. If you have had short stories or anything under 30,000 words
appear in a magazine or anthology, you would still be eligible.
. If you wrote a 45,000-word story that was published in print as
a stand-alone book, you are not eligible for this contest.

What formatting should I use?

Dorchester does not have any formatting requirements other than
that pages are typed, double-spaced, legible and unbound.

How long should the first three chapters be?

We request that the first three chapters not exceed 50 pages. If
your book starts with a Prologue, please include that and then
the first two chapters.

How do you calculate your word count?

If the manuscript is written in a standard font, our word count
requirement generally means it will run about 340-400 pages. Your
computer can help give you a rough estimate of what constitutes
80,000-90,000 words, but we won't be tallying them up exactly
when the entries come in.

May I enter more than one title?

No. Before we have allowed multiple entries, but since you can
only final for one, we now request that you send only one
submission.

Impromptu Q&A

Okay, so I admit it. I have no idea what to blog about. I've been sitting here, staring at this white box, and can't come up with a topic.

So, I had a brainstorm. I'll hold a Q&A.

What kinds of questions will I answer? Anything to do with writing--erotic romance, Ellora's Cave, craft, publishing, agents, marketing/promo, whatever. Post your question in the comments and I'll answer. Sound like fun?

God, I hope I get at least one question or I'm going to feel *really* lame and I might have to go hide under a rock somewhere. Just kidding :)

A sneak preview of Burning Hunger and a question

Since Burning Hunger doesn't go "live" on Ellora's Cave's home page until this Friday, I thought I'd post a little preview for your enjoyment here. Hope you like it!

But before I do, I wanted to ask a question: I've come to appreciate the fact that successful romance authors write heroes who are not only sexy, mysterious and droolworthy, but also loveable. What romance novel characters do you find loveable, and what traits in them make them that way to you? I can't wait to read your answers!

And now, here's my excerpt:

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
An Excerpt From: BURNING HUNGER
Copyright TAWNY TAYLOR, 2007
All Rights Reserved, Ellora's Cave Publishing, Inc.

Hot, sweet blood streamed down Marek’s throat, sending pulsing waves of raw energy through his tired body and urgent need to his groin. He jerked the woman closer, eager to take his fill of both her blood and her body. Yet no matter how firmly her softening form molded to his, and no matter how eagerly he drank, he could not get his fill of either.

More!

He drew in another mouthful of her blood. The unfamiliar sound of his heartbeat, slow and wavering but growing steadier, thumped in his ears. Strength returned to his arms and legs. The overwhelming weariness that had nearly overtaken him slowly lifted.

More!

He pulled in a third mouthful of energizing blood. She whimpered, lifted her arms and draped them over his shoulders. Her legs straddled one of his and her hips ground into his thigh as his heat burned into her.

“Ohhh...”she said on a sigh.

Dayne’s growl of protest stopped him from taking what his body demanded. He would kill her if he didn’t stop now. They had seven nights to get their fill. Although he craved complete and immediate satisfaction, he knew receiving it would come at a great price. To all three of them.

Meeting Dayne’s gaze, Marek gently pushed the flushed, dazed woman toward him, encouraging Dayne to take what he needed. She cried out, visibly disappointed by his apparent rejection. But when Dayne eased her around, swept her hair aside and sank his fangs into her porcelain skin, her expression turned wanton once more.

Agonizing lust simmered in his veins as he watched his new blood-mate drink. The expression in Dayne’s eyes turned fierce, erotic, as he pulled in a second mouthful of the woman’s blood, stirring Marek’s lust to even more painful heights.

Driven by his need, he ripped the back of the woman’s shirt down the center, revealing a stripe of silky skin marred by an ugly black strap.

He groaned.

The woman whispered, “Oh yessss...”

He unfastened her bra and gently lowered her arms, pressing his length against her back. His hips rocked as he removed her clothing from her upper body, driven by a different kind of hunger surging through his system. A sexual hunger.

Dayne lifted his head, releasing her neck. The bloodstained mark on her skin vanished instantly. His tongue swept over his lips, an invitation.

It was done. Dayne was now bound to him, and he to Dayne. For the first time in his life, he was overcome by sexual hunger for another man.

Driven by instinct, Marek hooked a hand behind Dayne’s head and with the woman’s writhing body between them, claimed his mouth. Their tongues battled, stabbing, stroking while the woman’s soft derriere pillowed his cock and balls, the scent of fresh spring air and delicate flowers teased his nostrils and her feminine whimpers and sighs filled his ears.

The agony and ecstasy.

Senses that had slowly faded over the centuries were suddenly painfully sharp, a contrast so severe it nearly drove him mad. He could hear the gusting of air as she exhaled. Could smell the musk of her need. Could feel the cool silk of Dayne’s hair twining around his fingers.

He broke the kiss, instead turning his attention to the woman who’d given him so much. By the simple act of being there, submitting to their needs, she’d given both of them a chance at another five hundred years of life. She would get her reward.

The clue she wanted. The dominant lovers she craved. And the release she demanded.

* * * * *
Oh my God! They’re kissing each other? They’re bi? That is so hot.

That was one enormous adult playground.

Number One caught her hands in his fist and lifted her arms over her head. He stepped closer until his huge frame completely invaded her personal space, both driving her crazy with desire and making her feel slightly uncomfortable at the same time.

It was a bizarrely thrilling combination--discomfort and desire.

“I can smell your arousal,” he murmured, his eyes searing her skin as his gaze swept over her face. “The fear intensifies your reaction.”

Did it ever!

Was that why she wasn’t screaming for her life? Was that why she wasn’t kicking him in the gonads or at least begging him to stop? She’d never had sex with a complete stranger, let alone two. She didn’t even know their names.

God, how bad was that?

“You have been secretly yearning for this for a long time.” He pulled slightly, forcing her hands higher in the air. Her biceps sandwiched her head, pressing against her ears and muffling sounds, his voice. Her racing heartbeat pounded in her head. “You want a man to take control in the bedroom.”

She did. She really, really did.

No. This was so wrong! Control? Absolutely not. Sleeping with men she didn’t know. Kidnappers. Bad men. They were bad.

But they looked soooooo good. And felt soooo amazing.

He gathered both of her wrists into one fist and twisted, forcing her to turn her body to the side, where Number Two was kneeling.

“Spread your legs,” Number Two demanded.

No doubt what would happen next. A gush of heat pulsed to her core as she met his gaze. A split second later, a spike of guilt stabbed her insides. She was crazy if she did anything with these guys. A shameless hussy. She hadn’t been raised like this’to fuck the first kidnapping Chippendale she stumbled upon -- or first pair of kidnapping Chippendales.

Time to reclaim some of her scruples, to recover her brain out of the thick fog that had somehow enveloped it.
How had she gotten to this point anyway?

One minute she’d been talking about a job as a personal waitress--or something like that. And then what?

She looked down at her clothes, lying in a heap on the floor. How’d her shirt get ripped? Why couldn’t she remember? Was there anything to remember? Of course there was.

Her neck tingled, burned like she’d scratched it. After Number One released her wrists, she pressed her fingertips to the sore spot, the chill easing the pain.

As she struggled to gather her thoughts, she lifted her chin, an intentional show of defiance. “No.”

Number One’s formerly charming smile turned wicked and a little threatening, utterly sexy. “But you’ve given us so much. Don’t you wish to receive your reward?”

Happy Monday!

No, Monday is not normally a day worthy of celebration, nor is this particular Monday anything special. BUT, my kiddies are back in school! Yay! No more bored kids dragging around the house, griping they have "nothing to dooooo." The weather last week sucked, of course. So they were stuck inside.

Today, we're back to "normal". Jacob, the little terror, is up to his usual--racing through the house, leaving a wake of destruction behind him. And I'm sitting at my computer, getting ready to dig back into my poor neglected wip.

But, before I get into writing-mode, a quick promo post about this week's release (Friday, April 20th).

Twilight's Possession is a series of vampire menage stories about a group of dedicated, powerful (and yes, most definitely sexy) men (vampires), chosen for a special purpose by their king. They've been selected because of their bravery, leadership, strength, and loyalty. Each set of two vampires will face different challenges as they are brought into the Cytherean Guard. Their morals, beliefs, and bodies will be tested. And of course, they will fall in love. These stories have all the elements I LOVE in books: men I can fall in love (and lust) with, an exciting plot involving some bad guys and a treasure hunt, sex scenes that'll make a girl sweat, and a heroine I can completely relate to.

Because I'm so excited about this new series, I've created a special website dedicated to it: www.twilightspossession.com. I really hope you all enjoy Burning Hunger and the two future books I've planned for the series: Carnal Hunger and Everlasting Hunger. Burning Hunger will be available in multiple formats from www.ellorascave.com on Friday.

The blurb:

Private detective Brea Maguire is on her first case, tracking down a stolen statue—the Sacred Triad—before it’s buried in the black market. Unfortunately, today—Friday the Thirteenth—isn’t her day. Being kidnapped from the mall by a pair of bizarre guys who put the Chippendales to shame, didn’t figure into her new career plans.

Thanks so much for reading!

Fever!

I hate being sick. *Dragging myself to the computer* Hi everyone. *cough, sputter, sneeze* This cold has knocked me on my butt. It's awful! My face is killing me and nothing's dulling the pain.

But I did have some good news this week.

I received a new book cover, and is it ever gorgeous! DROOL! It's the cover for my May print release, Animal Urges. I am so excited about this release for a few reasons:

  • Because it's a shapeshifter book-- a two-in-one that includes Mark of the Beast and Touch of the Beast. Outside of the Pocket anthology (Master of Secret Desires, June 2007) I haven't had a shapeshifter print book out from EC since Wet and Wilde (selkie).

  • Because it came as a TOTAL surprise, since I only found out a week or so ago that it would be coming out in print.

  • And finally because EC's doing this special promotion where this book, along with a handful of others, will be launched at a special book signing in Ohio the first weekend in May.

So, you wanna see? Gotta warn you, though. If you're burning up with a fever like I have been, you might want to take some Tylenol first (bad joke, I know, LOL--blame it on the NyQuil).

Gggggggggrowllllll

Blurbs:

Mark of the Beast

City girl Abby Clumm wouldn't normally travel to remote cabins in Alaska alone. But with the expectation that her friend will be arriving shortly, she makes the journey to their rented cabin solo. Unfortunately, things don’t go as she plans--no real surprise there, when do they?--and her first night she finds herself alone in the boonies, a shotgun she doesn’t know how to use and a failing wooden door the only things standing between her and some kind of very hungry animal outside. She’s now caught in a battle for survival.

Research scientist Tarik Evert has no idea what’s wrong. He’s suddenly driven by a need so urgent it’s painful. The scent of a woman nearby beckons him, sends him staggering outside into the cold. And then somehow he’s at her door, not sure what just happened...or what is about to happen if she lets him inside.

He only knows one thing--the hunger that brought him to her in the first place.

Touch of the Beast

Katie Spenser is looking forward to some R & R with her best friend Abby when she makes the loooong trip from Chicago to Alaska. Unfortunately, rest and relaxation are not what she gets.

A missing best friend.
Men who turn into bears…
Bad guys shooting guns…

The only part of Katie's so-called vacation that's pleasant is Raul Zant. She simply cannot resist a guy so sexually dominant that a mere glance produces delightful tingles and quivers of anticipation. And the sex… Two words: Mind. Blowing.

Security Officer Raul must turn over his renegade best friend to Omega, or his brother will die. He loves his brother, but handing over his best friend isn't exactly painless. And speaking of pain, his desire for Katie is so relentless and intense it's agonizing. She will surrender. He must have her.

Together, with assassins at their heels and fiery lust driving them into each other's arms, Katie and Raul must rescue their friends, uncover who is behind Omega, and learn whether there is a cure for Raul and Tarik's unusual "ailment".

The trick will be staying alive.

You can read a free excerpt of each on THIS page. Enjoy!

The NY Times talks about The Birds and Bees

From the article:

Sexual desire. The phrase alone holds such loaded, voluptuous power that the mere expression of it sounds like a come-on — a little pungent, a little smutty, a little comical and possibly indictable.

Interesting! I'm surprised the NY Times is tackling a subject like this. It's more...Cosmo, IMO. Then again, I'll admit I don't read the NY Times regularly.

Read the entire article HERE. In particular, the descriptions of sensations might come in handy when you're writing a sex scene.

Enjoy!

Blogging for the Divas

Since I'm too sick to think, I'm going to post a couple of Diva releases. Enjoy! And here's hoping tomorrow I'm at least feeling human again.

Gothic Blue - coverGOTHIC BLUE - Portia Da Costa

'What are you going to do to me?' Belinda asked defiantly. 'Beat me or something?

Smack my bottom? I'm sure that's what you decadent aristocrats live for - a chance to humiliate the lower orders.' Even as she was speaking, this idea - which should have seemed horrendous - was becoming highly exciting.

At an archduke's reception, a handsome young nobleman falls under the spell of a malevolent but irresistible sorceress.

Two hundred years later, Belinda Seward also falls prey to sensual forces she can neither understand nor control. Stranded by a thunderstorm at a remote Gothic priory, Belinda and her boyfriend are drawn into an enclosed world of luxurious decadence and sexual alchemy.

Their host is the courteous but melancholic Andre Von Kastel; a beautiful aristocrat who mourns his lost love. He has plans for Belinda - plans which take her into the realms of obsessive love and the erotic paranormal.

"Above all else, Gothic Blue is a romance. There are plenty of supernatural elements, and more than plenty erotic interludes. Portia Da Costa does many things very well: plot, characterisation and (in the case of this title) she injects a credible suggestion of the supernatural in a realistic world. She's renowned for writing sex scenes that are so hot they sizzle and, in Gothic Blue, she does not disappoint."
~ Ashley Lister, Erotica Readers and Writers Association

"Packed with sex and kink, this is a novel that still retains a mysterious and powerful air. A hint of the supernatural is mixed with a fun gothic setting as a tale of intertwining romances is told by Da Costa with aplomb. A highly recommended novel"
~ E.T.O – Issue 44 March 07"the sex is relentlessly intense!" ~ Forum

I knew it had to happen sooner or later...

I'm sick. Not deathly ill or anything. But my head's going to explode, my throat's on fire, and I think I was run over by a Hummer. *sniffle, sniffle, sneeze*

So, I figure, since I have been known in the past to develop pneumonia and/or meningitis from colds, I'm slowing down a bit. No jogging (that's actually killing me!) and I'm forcing myself to spend less time on the internet.

I'll pop in tomorrow with an update. 'Til then, how about sharing your fave chicken noodle soup recipes or cures for a cold?

Back to bed...

What is Carpe Nocturne?

If you've been to my site in the last twenty-four hours or so, you might know the answer to this. Then again, maybe not :)

Carpe Nocturne is a series of closely-tied stories about a woman who owns a nightclub. This bar isn't your average nightspot, though. The patrons are all immortals--demons, vampires, shapeshifters, that sort of thing. The best part--she's the destined mate of not one but two vampires.

Sound interesting? I hope so!

It all started last year, as I was preparing for the Romantic Times Booklover's convention in Daytona. I was sewing costumes--an obsession, I'll admit--when this idea popped into my head. What if someone went to a costume/theme party, expecting the guests to be human...but they're not. The fangs, wings and fur are REAL? Oooh. That could be fun!

Enter Sylvie, the bar's owner, who's this close to landing on skid row. She's desperate to make some things happen, but she has no idea what she's in for by inviting the immortal underground into her bar :)

Juno Books

I read this and thought there might be some authors (myself included) who might be interested in this information:

April 2, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Juno Books, a publisher of fantasy that focuses on female protagonists, will be moving into mass market paperbacks this fall with four titles. "Up to now, we've been publishing attractive trade paperbacks," said editor Paula Guran. "We'll continue with a mix of trades and mass market. The latter gives us further market penetration and a chance to reach a broader audience with our books."

The first mass market titles will include, in September, Jamie Craig's CHASING SILVER, a steamy noir-ish futuristic/paranormal novel, and BLOOD MAGIC, a dark fantasy from debut author Matthew Cook. DANCING WITH WEREWOLVES, an urban fantasy from veteran author Carole Nelson Douglas follows in October. AMBERLIGHT, a literate fantasy by Australian author Sylvia Kelso will be published in November. Sequels for all four are anticipated in 2008.

Juno Books is distributed nationally through Diamond Book Distribution. For more information about Juno Books, visit www.juno-books.com.

Interesting! I love their covers.

I did a little poking around and learned Juno is a new imprint of Wildside Press, a house that has been publishing sf/fantasy since the late 1980's. Juno requires electronic submissions, however they are not an epublisher. And they only release a very limited number of books a year.

But I'm intrigued.

For those authors with fantasy/paranormal books centering on a female protagonist, you might have an option here, since larger houses aren't buying what they'd label as paranormal "chick lit" these days. Happy submitting and good luck!

As a special treat to all you folks out here in blog land, I've posted a steamy excerpt of Wild Nights on this private page for your enjoyment.

Check back often! I'm planning on doing the same with my April releases: Carpe Nocturne: Dressed to Kill (vampire erotic romance, Changeling Press) and Twilight's Possession: Burning Hunger (vampire menage, Ellora's Cave).

Enjoy! And thank you for your support.

Burn Baby Burn!

Okay, so it took me almost a full year to find this, but I discovered this afternoon via some blog-hopping that Smart Bitches trashed one of my covers. And did they trash it bad. Hilarious! Seriously. I hadn't thought about the pose on that cover until I read their comments.

Read their commentary on my cover HERE.

Question:

Do you like to read snarky blogs like Smart Bitches? If so, which are your favorites?
