Want to know your website traffic rank?

I'm one of those geeks who track website statistics, Amazon and Google rank, etc. So, when I get a link like this one, I'm in full geek glory. Type your url into the box up at the top, click the button next to it, and you'll get an idea of your site's traffic ranking. It does NOT report the actual number of hits. Hopefully, you have a site hit counter for that. But it gives you an idea of how your site ranks in traffic.

Note: after taking a look at some more popular authors' urls, it became clear that site traffic/site rank is not directly related to an author's popularity or sales.

Enjoy!

Man Love

If you read erotic romance, you must have noticed the latest trend. Books involving male/male sexual interaction, written for women, by women.

I've read plenty of discussions on the topic and still I have no explanation for why it's such a huge draw, outside of the fact that women just seem to love reading about two powerful men having sex. It's not gay fiction. It doesn't (generally) delve into a character's emotional issues with his homosexuality. More often, it skims across the surface, sticking with the physical sensations, erotic experience. And a key difference, of course is the presence of a heroine, who interacts sexually with both men.

I have several erotic works that incoporate male/female/male sexual interaction, including my entire Carpe Nocturne series (which concludes with this Friday's release, If Looks Could Kill), Burning Hunger, the second book in the Twilight's Possession series, Carnal Hunger (which hasn't released yet), Wild Nights, and my current wip, Double Take.

Ironically, before I began writing my first book with male/male sex, I discussed this trend with customers at the indy bookstore I work at. Ninety percent of them said they do not like male/male sex in their erotic romance books. The other ten percent are not bothered by it, although they don't intentionally seek out books with it. And yet, when you pose a question to online readers--say, in a chat--you get a very different response. They are very pro-m/m, enthusiastically rattling off their fave books/authors of the subgenre.

Does that mean it's mainly an ebook/internet trend? Not necessarily. I don't have access to sales figures, but I do follow Amazon rankings. And it does seem that Amazon sales are stronger for m/f/m books.

So I'd love to hear, do you read or write m/m or m/f/m? Do you read or write gay fiction? Or do you become uncomfortable when reading m/m sex scenes? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I'm...it?

So, it seems I've been tagged by Kristen and Jax.

Here are the rules:

A. Each player lists 8 facts/habits about themselves.
B. The rules of the game are posted at the beginning before those facts/habits are listed.
C. At the end of the post, the player then tags 8 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eight facts?! Eight...hmmm...
1. I was a volunteer foster mom for the Michigan Humane society for years, caring mostly for litters of puppies and kittens with health problems.
2. When I was a kid, my teachers called me the Rubberband-banner because I was so flexible. Like Jax, I was pretty good at gymnastics when I was little.
3. I went to an all girl's Catholic high school. Who knew three-foot tall nuns could be so scary?
4. I love to dance, even at my current age. I'm trying to get the hubby to take some ballroom dance classes with me. Last spring, I took a hiphop class.
5. I am extremely fickle when it comes to haircolor. I change it about every six months. My natural color(which no one has seen in years) is a dull dishpan blonde. blah.
6. My dream home would be an older farmhouse on about two acres of property.
7. I love ice cream sandwiches made with Twix ice cream and chocolate chip waffles. YUM!
8. I watch reality television for "research" (yes, I honestly tell my hubby that).
Now, who should I tag?
Emma, Paige, D.D. Diana, Antonia, Angeleque, Dayna, and MG.
I can breathe again!
Hear that? It's me exhaling the lungful of air I'd been holding for days. (Didn't know that was possible? lol Let me assure you, it is!)
Bessie's alive! Whooo hooo! *happy dance*
And I finished Carnal Hunger and turned it into my editor.
*sighhhhhhhh*
I have to say, Carnal Hunger was a difficult story to write. There are some deep issues in that book, stuff I haven't touched upon in my EC books--drug addiction, codependence, unhealthy family dynamics.
I think I'm watching too much reality tv.
What am I working on now? Something fun. A REALLY hot Quickie for EC. I have a title (Double Take). It's going to be so much fun writing this one. Lots of sexy bondage, man/man love, sexual exploration. YUMMY! I'm hoping to turn it in by July 4th.
What's everyone out there working on? Or have some good news to share? Post it in the comments.
RIP Bessie, 2003-2007
Does anyone else freak out when their computer dies? OMG, you'd have thought I'd lost a family member this morning. I can't sit still. I'm dizzy from hyper-ventilating...and this isn't even my writing computer. (Thank GOD all my writing files have been moved over to my laptop)
Bessie, our old (if you can call four years "old") desktop was, however, our gateway to our home network. She allowed our computers to share files, printers, etc. Not to mention she was the only computer that had my beloved Adobe Photoshop (and a large number of my graphics files) on it.
Bessie, come back to us.
I hauled her up to the local repair shop. Fingers crossed it won't cost a bazillion dollars to resurrect her!
Triskelion Closing its Doors
Following a series of unfortunate events, including RWA dis-invitation; complaints of unpaid royalties; and the resignation of Gail Northman, Triskelion Publishing is reportedly closing its doors. According to Dear Author, Triskelion will be filing Chapter 7 Bankruptcy.
The following, posted on Triskelion's website, confirms the fact that they are going out of business. I see no mention of bankruptcy:
Sadly, Triskelion Publishing will be closing its doors on July 2, 2007. We'd like to thank our readers for all their support and our authors for providing endless pleasure and memories that we will treasure forever.
I'm very sorry to hear this. Very sorry.
Speaking to authors: if you have a book contracted by Triskelion and have not requested your rights back, you should do so immediately. If Triskelion files bankruptcy as Dear Author has reported, the company's assets will be frozen, making things very complicated.
Get your rights back now.
TMI?
Lately, blogland has become a place for smear campaigns and dirty laundry. Not only are books ripped apart (ala Mrs. Giggles), but now bloggers are going after publishers and authors. Company information is shared. Untruths are spouted as gospel. Political leanings are aired (and hotly debated). Sensitive personal information is disbursed in the most disrespectful manner.
It’s all so ugly.
And yet, the minute someone posts a hot topic--like Jaid Black’s marriage to a prisoner--hits soar to the stratosphere. Commenters say over and over it’s TMI, they don’t want to know someone has a drug habit or is married to a man in prison, and yet they come back to read more. Blogs have become the romance reader’s gossip mags (National Enquirer). This week, romance’s Britney/Lindsay/Paris is Jaid Black.
Next week...who knows?
Ironically, being trashed has its benefits. Sales are generated from these horrific displays. This puts authors in a strange and uncomfortable position. Much like the love-hate relationship between stars and paparazzi in the world of Hollyweird, authors are finding themselves in a love-hate relationship with snark blogs.
So, I ask, do you read snark blogs? And if you do, what do you feel about what you’re seeing? If you don’t like it, are you willing to speak with your mouse? The bottom line is a blog is only as good as its traffic.
Book Marketing from a Publisher's POV
EC author Mandy Roth is running a marketing-themed blog series called Marketing with Mandy. She's interviewed several authors that are more slanted to writing, but this interview with EC Publisher Raelene Gorlinsky has some terrific (and practical) advice.
Mandy's questions include:
"What do you feel is the single most important thing an author can do to promote their work, after writing a “killer” book of course?"
"What publicity can authors contracted through EC/Cerd [Cerridwen]expect from the publisher on their behalf?"
"What online promoting do you feel is the most effective? Blogs? Chats? Virtual Booksignings? Blog Tours? Websites? Myspace? Ect?"
Enjoy!
Why Market to Libraries?
Writers, ever wonder if it's was worth the effort and expense to market your published book to libraries? I mean, really. You sell one copy of your erotic-time-travel-BDSM-shapeshifter novel titled Her Alpha Master to a libarary. And then readers check out that copy for free. Over and over again. Instead of rushing to the nearest Barnes and Nobles to pay top dollar for their own copy.
That's not going to get you on the NY Times list tomorrow.
Perhaps not...but over time it can help an author build name recognition.
Fact: There are thousands of libraries across the country, providing you the opportunity to expose your name to millions of patrons.
Still not sure? Read the rest of this article by author Leigh Barbour.
Ellora's Cave Announces Additional S&S Releases
Yes, the rumors are true: Ellora’s Cave will be increasing the number of books to be published and distributed through Simon & Schuster.
It began at the end of 2006, with the release of All She Wants, an anthology containing stories by Jaid Black, Shiloh Walker and Dominique Adair. The Christmas anthology, a great success, was featured in Cosmo magazine.
Monthly releases followed. Currently, more than twenty authors are involved in the partnership between EC and Simon and Schuster, and more will be included. There is also talk of the 2008 line up expanding to single titles. It has been reported on Dear Author that EC and Simon and Schuster met at BEA to discuss the future of the relationship. Thirteen more anthologies are in the works. Ellora’s Cave is currently in the process of selecting the thirty-nine novellas to be included.
EC/Pocket Books Anthology List Jan.-July 2007
1/07 – Taming Him
Kimberly Dean, Summer Devon, Michelle M. Pillow
2/07 – Fever-Hot Dreams
Jaci Burton, Sherri L. King, Samantha Winston
3/07 – Lover From Another World
Rachel Carrington, Elizabeth Jewell,
Shiloh Walker
4/07 – Hurts So Good
Gail Faulkner, Lisa Renee Jones,
Sahara Kelly
5/07 – Bedtime, Playtime
Jaid Black, Ruth D. Kerce, Sherri L. King
6/07 – Master of Secret Desires
S.L. Carpenter, Elizabeth Jewell, Tawny
Taylor
7/07 – His Fantasies, Her Dreams
S.L. Carpenter, Sherri L. King, Trista Ann Michaels
This announcement, along with Samhain's recent news about a potential partnership with Kensington, poses an unexpected problem for some authors--primarily those who have contracts with NY houses. It appears the paperback releases can, in some instances, cause authors to breach contracts with competiting houses. Jordan Summers explains the details in more depth on her blog HERE.(http://www.jordansummers.com/js/GetArticle.aspx?id=1077) But for newer authors who aren't yet writing for a NY house, these partnerships offer the benefits of MUCH wider distribution in chain and independent bookstores, advertising and sales teams.
As an author who does write for a NY house, in addition to EC, I've found that the release of my Pocket anthology (Master of Secret Desires) has helped boost sales of my May 1st EC paperback release (Animal Urges). The timing worked to my advantage. Has it made me an overnight erotic romance star? No. But it has been a wonderful tool in helping me build name recognition in an extremely competitive marketplace.
Book Marketing 101
Many authors are not particularly marketing savvy , often because they have no interest in becoming marketing savvy. I'll admit I'm one of them. I have no problems getting on a Yahoo group and posting a glowing review of a friend's book. But it's agonizing to do the same thing for my own. It just goes against that old "don't brag; it's not nice" thing I learned as a kid, I think.
There's always the question of what to do, where to post, what is time-efficient and what's a waste. Do online chats produce sales? What about MySpace? Do book trailers attract readers or annoy them? And does it pay to shell out big dollars for color ads in trade magazines?
ACK! Is it any wonder some authors are intimidated?
The following site doesn't try to answer all those questions, but it does lay down a basic format for preparing for a PRINT book's release. There are handy links to helpful resources, among other things. I thought it was well written and easy to follow. I hope it's helpful to some of you, too.
Samhain First Line Contest
This sounds like a lot of fun! I just had to pass it on. The first entries are already posted but there's still time to enter.
Good luck!
Forwarded with permission
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Samhain Publishing is going to be holding a Best First Line contest on our blog (http://www.samhainpublishing.com/blog).

Starting Monday, June 4th at 8am Eastern, authors are invited to leave the first line of a previously unpublished work (of 12,000 words or more) in the comments of the Best First Line blog post. The contest is open to published and unpublished authors not currently contracted with Samhain Publishing.

On Friday, June 8th at noon Eastern, we will close the comments and no more entrants will be admitted into the contest. Only those who enter by posting on our first line contest blog post between 8:00 a.m. EST, June 4th 2007 and 12:00 Noon EST, June 8th will be eligible to participate in the first line contest.

Samhain editors will choose a group of entrants for the next round and the “winning” first lines will be posted on Monday, June 11th. Winners of the first round will have until early noon Eastern on Friday to post their first and second lines (both must be posted together) in the comments of that blog post—we will not email those who move on to the next round, you must check back at the blog. The contest will run in a subsequent manner(with previous lines plus the new line, being posted), with editors paring down the entries and asking for the next line in the entry, for a total of 5 lines. The contest will end on July 6th and a minimum of three entrants will be invited to submit their manuscript (first three chapters and complete synopsis, minimum) to Samhain Publishing for consideration for publication on our 2008 schedule.

A few rules:
1) One line only (a dialogue tag is allowed, but make sure you’re punctuating things correctly. We’re editors. We’ll know if you cheat and use an action tag making it a second line, instead of one whole line)
2) If you move on to the second round, you cannot change that first line in any way. Each line posted must remain as written as you move through the rounds.
3) If we close the comments before you’ve had a chance to post your next line, we’re very sorry, but you will be eliminated from the competition. We must make this fair for everyone and still make it workable for us, and the only way to do that is to post a deadline.
4) This contest is for new material only. No previously published material
5) Samhain is a general publisher, you may enter material of any genre!

This is an opportunity for everyone who’s been waiting for submissions to open. Submissions are due to remain closed until later in the summer, so we’re giving at least three people the chance to get their work in front of a Samhain editor before submissions re-open. If interest in the contest is high, we will give this opportunity to five authors.

Kensington and Samhain Publishing Announces New Partnership

At BEA this weekend Kensington announced the creation of a new romance imprint, in conjunction with epublisher Samhain. The new imprint (yet to be named) will publish one to two books a month. Details are still hazy, but the following are known:

Samhain will be responsible for the acquisition and editing of the line's books.

For the first several releases, best selling titles and books by established authors will be selected for the line.

For the most part, full length novels will be selected.

Kensington will print, market and distribute the books just like their other lines.

Books will be released in trade and mass market paper.

Authors will be paid directly from Kensington.

Read more on the Dear Author blog.

This is very exciting news for the Samhain owner, staff and authors. And I see this as a huge step toward cooperative business between small/epubs and larger houses.

This was an absorbing paranormal tale filled with suspense and passion ... The characters were strong and well developed ... Paranormal and erotica readers alike will not be able to put this one down.

A riveting read where the first sentence packs a punch and delivers the hook that had me gripped until the end. Some superb delivery lurks within the pages of Second Sight, along with excellent imagery ... My eyes tumbled over the sentences in a bid to read as quickly as I could ... Available Today!

The second book in my Carpe Nocturne series releases today. To celebrate, I did a complete rehaul of both my main website (http://www.tawnytaylor.com/Erotic-Romance-Stories.html) and my Twilight's Possession website (http://www.twilightspossession.com). The main gateway hasn't been changed (www.tawnytaylor.com)

Please, come take a look and tell me what you think. I'd appreciate any feedback, good or bad.

And now, about the release:

Carpe Nocturne 2: Kiss Me; Kill Me (Vampire Menage BDSM)

One determined entrepreneur.
Two seductive vampires.
A brutal murderer...
...and a bar where every vampire knows your name.
Gives new meaning to the expression "Thrilling Nightlife"

Sylvie Durand, nightclub owner and mate to not one but two powerful vampires, finds her desire for Excoluni officer Miko Dvorak every bit as intense as it was for his quarry, suspected murderer Burke Langton. She can and will love both men. She can and will serve both men. This is her future.

But life is far from perfect. The killer is still on the loose, and Burke has yet to uncover his sinister plans or clear his name.
